A native of San Diego, Jason Hanna began teaching himself to play the trumpet at the age of twelve. Growing up in a Mexican-American family that valued music, Jason was exposed to traditional Mexican songs and Jazz standards from a young age. By singing and playing along with this music, Jason developed keen improvisational skills and a strong musical ear. As a teenager he studied with San Diego musicians Charlie Lauer, Roy Anthony Jr. and Gilbert Castellanos.
After a lesson with renowned trumpeter Marvin Stamm, Jason was inspired to pursue jazz as a career. Upon turning to the San Diego Jazz scene he met Mike Bogart, a Navy trumpeter mostly known for his work in the Maynard Ferguson Big Bop Nouveau Band and Tower of Power. Bogart suggested that Jason audition to become a Navy Musician. Jason took his advice and enlisted in the Navy, performing in concerts and festivals all over the world. While stationed at Navy Band Newport in Newport, Rhode Island, he studied with trumpeters Tiger Okoshi, Michael Phillip Mossman, Tim Stanley and John Allmark.
An extremely versatile musician, Jason has performed and recorded with several notable groups and jazz artists such as: The Temptations, Michael Phillip Mossman, Tito Puente Jr., Unsteady, Bobby Shew, Bill Waltrous, Bob Boss, The John Allmark Big Band, Harris Simon, Third Coast Jazz Band, Midnight Rivals, Transfer, Soultones, Greg Abate, Gilbert Castellanos, Mikan Zlatkovich, Archie Thompson, Bill Caballero's Orquesta Bi-Nacional de Mambo, and many more.
Jason is also the voice of San Diego's premier jazz quartet, Westside Inflection, and leader of his own Jason Hanna Jazz Trio and newly formed Jason Hanna and The Bullfighters.
